LIVING SCULPTURE

Modern Guesthouse & Pool, United States

In first visiting a hillside lot on the edge of a picturesque lake with a dramatic city skyline view, Charles R. Stinson envisioned an elegant sculpture that would offer a sense of loft living with a superb view. He accomplished this by lifting the main living quarters of the home to the second level. The homeowners had searched for downtown lofts before realizing they could get a similar urban feel from a home that also took advantage of the substantial lake and trail system outside of the city. The European couple also found the minimalist design to be synonymous with their modern lifestyle.

A few years after settling into their new home, the couple revisited Charles with the aspiration of building a guesthouse to accommodate family members from overseas that visit for several months at a time. The couple also requested a swimming pool and large exterior entertainment space for gatherings. An additional kitchen and living room would serve both their extended stay guests as well as allow seamless entertainment outside toward the new pool. Stinson’s overall goal was to give a unique identity to the guesthouse while maintaining a sense of cohesion with the original home.

The guesthouse aligns with the north property line to offer privacy for their guests from the main house, make full use of the site, and to create a sense of enclosure for the new swimming pool. The main level of the guesthouse is an open floor plan centered by an Italian kitchen that meets the highest environmental standards. Guests awakening on the second floor lofted bedroom only need to walk a few steps to the spacious deck and sitting area to read the morning newspaper. The lofted bedroom features stunning views through two-stories of glass facing toward the morning skyline and the verdant park beyond. The expansive windows not only create an uncompromised view of nature, but also a changing play of light on the sculptural interior throughout the day and seasons.
