A Forever Home in Orlando
Where Modern Architecture, Place, and the Rhythms of Everyday Life Come Together
Finding the Right Orlando Architect
“I’ve been building my whole life, but I’ve never built anything for us. I knew that by the time I retired I wanted to build something new.”
For this Orlando, Florida couple, the vision for their forever home began with a simple desire: to create a place that felt deeply connected to the life they wanted to live. Their property, framed by mature live oaks, a pristine lake, and a protected park alive with wildlife, already possessed a sense of quiet seclusion. The architecture needed to honor that setting without competing with it.
Modern architecture had long appealed to the couple, but they were wary of creating something that felt overly precious or self-conscious. They wanted a modern home, but not a monument. A house, not a statement.
Their search eventually led them to Charles Stinson in Minnesota.
A chance article, a timely meeting at their Orlando property, and an invitation to visit several of Charles’s designs in Minnesota became a turning point. Each home was distinctly its own, yet all shared an unmistakable quality: they felt like homes. The couple returned to Orlando knowing they had found the architect who understood what they were seeking.
From First Sketch to Forever Home
The project itself evolved through circumstance and conversation. What began as a two-story 5,200-square-foot residence was reconsidered as the couple’s needs shifted. Charles developed a more restrained 4,200-square-foot design, but the project was eventually placed on hold. Then came another conversation.
The client asked Charles to let him know if he ever imagined a 3,000-square-foot, one-level home: a true “forever house.”
Charles returned to the drawing board. Inspired by another project and the possibilities of the Florida landscape, he sketched a new vision for one-level living, colored it by hand, and sent it to Orlando.
Two days later came the response: “I don’t just like it, I love it.” From there, the vision began to take shape.

A Home That Belongs to Its Place
The completed home is intentionally simple, enduring, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Wood ceilings extend seamlessly from inside to out. Coral stone, embedded with ocean shells and fossils, brings the landscape and history of Florida into the architecture. Even the structure’s hurricane-rated construction is quietly integrated into the design.
Perhaps most tellingly, the first sketch remains remarkably close to the finished home.
For Charles, that continuity speaks to the essence of the architectural process: listening closely, remaining open to change, and allowing circumstance, inspiration, and place to guide the work.
For the clients, it resulted in something even more meaningful. A modern home that finally feels like their own. A place designed not simply for retirement, but for all the years of living still ahead. A forever home.
